Overview

Originally from Borneo, Acromantulas are now found worldwide, despite being Class A non-exchangeable goods. One of the most well-known, large colonies is located in the Forbidden Forest near Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. These enormous arachnids prefer to live in dense vegetation and are very aggressive, attacking humans on instinct. However, if a bond is formed, such as Rubeus Hagrid’s relationship with Aragog, it is possible for a human to survive contact with the vicious creatures. They are also capable of growing up to 15 feet in diameter and have many offspring, which seem to make up a large enough colony themselves. They are extremely intelligent beasts, able to replicate human speech, and are classified as XXXXX creatures, or wizard-killers that are impossible to domesticate, by the Ministry of Magic.

Dangers

  • Their large pincers are strong enough to completely sever limbs and cut through bone.
  • They hunt humans, either squashing or eating them once they manage to find one.
  • Their venom is effective and swift. You would need an Antidote for Uncommon Poisons to cure its effects.
  • Spider Venom is very complex, containing everything from salts to enzymes. There are two main types of venom: necrotic and neurotoxic. Necrotic venom is cytotoxic, having one purpose: to damage and kill cells. This can lead to painful blisters, inflammation, and lesions. Neurotoxic venom affects the nervous system and causes respiratory and/or heart failures. Acromantula venom has a high concentration of peptides and proteins, which, if consumed, can and most likely will kill you, unless you have an Antidote for Uncommon Poisons. At first, peptides cause minor discomfort, then begin the dirty work for the spiders. They cause nerve failure, essentially making their prey immobile.

    Defence

  • The Bludgeoning Hex, the Stunning Spell, the Spider Repelling Spell, and the Immobilization Charm. Each of these spells can only work against one acromantula at a time, but the Immobilization charm allows a caster to affect many with enough willpower.
  • Flee as fast as your legs can carry you.
