Overview

A bubotuber is a magical plant that looks like a big, thick, black slug on the outside. The bubotuber's surface had shiny bumps that, when pressed, released a thick, yellowish-green liquid with a smell similar to petrol. No one knows where bubotubers originated from, but they could be seen in the Forbidden Forest and were kept in the Hogwarts greenhouses.

In the 1890–1891 school year, a young girl named Sacharissa Tugwood was fascinated by the bubotuber pus, believing it could be used for skincare. Sacharissa's idea turned out to be correct, and the bubotuber pus became a key ingredient in her beauty potions.
In the 1987–1988 school year, bubotubers in the Forbidden Forest were damaged by sleepwalking students. A forest troll even went to the Forest Lake in search of bubotubers, causing trouble for the centaurs who couldn't safely draw water. When Jacob's sibling, Charlie Weasley, and Liz Tuttle found out about the problem, they tried to plant bubotubers with Professor Sprout in the Herbology Classroom. However, they decided on a different plan since it would take too long for them to grow. They then planted bubotubers in the Forest Grove using dragon dung fertilizer and the Herbivicus Charm, causing them to mature instantly. They gave the mature bubotubers to the troll to prevent it from fighting with a centaur.
In the 1994-1995 school year, someone sent Hermione Granger a letter with bubotuber pus because they believed the untrue article by Rita Skeeter that said Hermione was playing with Harry Potter and Viktor Krum's feelings.

Bubotuber pus

Bubotuber pus was used to treat bad acne, but if the pus was not diluted, it could harm the skin in unexpected ways. To stay safe, it was recommended to wear dragon-hide gloves when working with it. This shows that bubotuber pus was applied to the skin, but the actual ointment might have included diluted pus mixed with other things.
